Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People buying such drugs need to be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified rebound.

The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," said one woman.

This challenge is compounded if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
